Review: Soia & Kyo Zip Collar Leather Jacket (Reg. & Petite)

As mentioned in my fall/winter 2013 wish list post, I am determined to add a leather jacket to my closet this year. I've been searching high and low, doing all kinds of research the past couple of months. At last, all my hard work has paid off (lol). I have found a leather jacket that I am completely in love with – Say hello to my newest love: The Soia & Kyo zip collar leather jacket. There were a few things I look out for when searching for a candidate:
• I was looking a non-black leather jacket. Black can be too harsh on a petite frame. I prefer gray or brown when it comes to leather jackets.
 • Of course, the most important thing was the fit. I wanted something that requires no alterations. Altering a leather jacket is just simply out of the question
• I was open to faux leather options as well since they can look just as real and stylish as the real version. In the end, I really wanted a real leather jacket.

Nothing was out of the ordinary but for some reason, it was impossible for me to find the right one for years. I had my heart set on the Michael Kors hooded quilted jacket. I asked my husband for his opinions and he wasn't a fan of the hood. I was OK with the hood but after some more digging around on the internet, I found the color on Macy’s site was not as pictured. The color was drab and not as vibrant in person. It was a deal breaker for me. The search continued until I stumped upon this Soia & Kyo jacket. If you’re not familiar with Soia & Kyo, it's a Canadian brand. Designer llan Elfassy was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. He debuted his women’s outerwear collection in 2004.

What I am wearing:
Jacket: Soia & Kyo leather jacket - size XS regular
Sunglasses: Kate Spade Avaline

Fit:
Let's start off with the fit. Soia & Kyo regular sizing goes from XXS up to XL and petite sizing goes from XSP(?) to LP. The style that I am wearing here is the only style that offers petite sizing. I was debating between an XS regular and a S petite. I like to have a little room for thicker sweaters. After much debating, I decided to give the XS regular a try. I knew the length would be fine on me but was afraid the sleeve would be too long. I am thrilled to report that the fit of this jacket is truly perfect for me. The sleeves are slimmer than most jackets I've come across. It gives a bit of room for some light layers but not too much. The sleeve length hits my arms exactly where I wanted. Because of the zippered sleeves, it would be impossible to alter the length. Measurements for a size XS regular when zipped up are as follows: shoulder to shoulder = 13.5", body length = 22", sleeve length = 24". The jacket is fully lined. The outer made from 100% genuine lambskin leather and the lining is polyester. I do wish the lining was a little more interesting than the typical black polyester.

Craftsmanship:
Just as expected, the jacket is very well made. This is my very first jacket from Soia & Kyo so I can’t speak for other jackets. It has a decent weight to it. The leather is buttery soft (I know that term is overused but that’s exactly how I would describe it). It has that pleasant new leather smell if you know what I am talking about without being overpowering.

Details:
I love the removable collar feature of this jacket. I probably prefer the jacket with the collar but it’s always good to have options. If this taupe color isn't your thing, the jacket is available in black as well. I am a fan of pewter hardware. It’s more muted and blends well with the rest of the jacket. The distressed look really makes this jacket and gives a vintage vibe to any outfit.

If you’re in the US, Nordstrom and Revolve Clothing carry a large selection of Soia & Kyo jackets. I know it’s a bit pricey but if you’re looking for a well-made, real leather jacket, the price is going to be up there. It’s definitely one of those splurge items. I told the husband that I would take this jacket as my Christmas gift this year and he didn't argue =)

This is super cute on you! I have 2 Soia & Kyo wool jackets and I *love* them. They are well made and really warm for those harsh Canadian winters! The only thing is that I wish they were still made in Canada like they used to be.
