Review: Zara Double-breasted coat in XS

Several readers expressed their interest in seeing the Zara mustard coat that I’ve ordered last week. Let me first start off by saying that I really am impressed with their fast shipping. I placed an order on Wednesday and got it 3 days later on Saturday. The package came tightly wrapped in plastic.

Onto the review, this coat is from the Zara Woman line. According to their size chart, the Zara Women line tends to run larger than the TRF line. I haven’t purchased anything from Zara previously so I was hesitate to order this coat. Ping has left me a comment saying this particular coat runs small. I immediately placed an order as soon as I saw her comment.

What I like:
• The color is absolutely stunning in person. This shade of mustard yellow is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I am obsessed with all things mustard at the moment. It’s perfect for the upcoming Fall. The color is so vibrant and total attention grabbing!
• The XS fits me perfectly! I seriously couldn't have asked for a better fit. I was very pleased to find this coat flatters everywhere. One thing I’d like to point out is the sleeve length. It hits me where it is supposed to. Unlike the J.Crew coat from last year, the sleeves were a tad short on me. I ended up selling mine because my tailor couldn't properly lengthen the sleeves. When I was in Boston, Jean was kind enough to let me try on her J.Crew metro coat (this year version ) and sadly, the sleeves are still short for me. I know I won’t be order any J.Crew coats this year.

What I don’t like:
• This jacket is not thick enough for Midwest winter. Compared to the J.Crew metro coat, it’s much lighter and thinner. It would work out better for someone who lives in warmer states.
• The black lining is really bugging me. I wish it came with beige/camel lining instead of black. I almost always wear my jacket unbuttoned. Therefore, the lining is going to show.
• Lastly, the style isn’t really what I am looking for (this is a huge turn off!). I am not a fan of the cinching at the waist and the Mandarin-collar. I guess I didn’t really pay attention to the details before ordering. This jacket reminds me so much of the J.Crew Colletta coat from last year. I wish it has a classic cut like the J.Crew metro coat.

Verdict: Although I love the color so much, I don’t think I am going to keep it. I like it but I don’t love it for several reasons. My first experience with Zara was great. I definitely will order from them again (especially now I know what size to order). My search for a mustard yellow coat continues…

the coat does look like it fits you in every way and i love the mustard color too!! i have to admit that i'm not a fan of the waist cinching either and prefer a style like the Metro coat. great review though and I can't wait for my blazer to come in (not so fast shipping down to Texas, I guess...).

Thanks for the detailed review, Sydney! A reader pointed out this coat to me as well a while back saying XS fit nicely. I went to my Zara store and they said it was ordered for NY and CA stores only, not Boston! I wavered on ordering it b/c I'm looking for a camel, not yellow coat, but I was eagerly looking fwd to your review.

I think the length and sleeves fit you very nicely but agree if you're not a fan of the style, then def not worth keeping for $170, esp at Zara quality. Ping also mentioned the color in person was bright and not a true mustard. How's the fit of the shoulders? In the first (open) photo the shoulder looked a bit boxy but then in the closed photo they looked fine on you.

Maybe it's my screen but the color looks more gold-ish yellow more than mustard?

I think it looks great on you (cute dress too) ...lol

But it's not to die for like I'd hoped. I wonder if I will like mine:) thanks for the detailed review- very helpful!!!

The color looks great. I saw this coat in blue in store and it's also very vibrant. I'm interested in a trench coat in the Kid's zara line. Trench coat with checked lining but I'm concerned about the fit. If you ever come across it, I'd love to see a review. Great post, as usual!

No point in keeping something that you dont love. It does fit you well though.

the coat looks great on you and does fit you nicely! i had the same reservations as you. i'm not a huge fan of the mandarin collar either and the color is more bright than a mustard yellow. also keep in mind that not all their coats runs small like this one, but i'd say 30-50% of their coats fits like this.

Awesome review Sydney! I think you made the right decision returning this...I don't really like this particular style either so I see why you are hesitating. The color is gorgeous though even though it doesn't look very mustard-y.

great color. nice buttons. black lining would bother me too. for having a cinched waist, flat pockets are odd. I'm disappointed now that you said the Metro coat's sleeve length is short on you, ergo, short on me.

Great review.

Thanks for the great review! Color and fit look wonderful on you, but I'm not a fan of the huge pockets. I think "invisible" and slanted like on the Lady Day coat. Good decision on passing. I think you can find a similarly colored coat for better quality and that has lining in a color you love.

Thanks for the review, Sydney. Like the color, coat length and sleeve length. That's about it. I'm glad you decide to pass. The waist looks terrible buttoned. Remember the Colletta coat had a horizontal stripe (belt-like) to define the waist, this one looks like it was just thrown together. Overall, it's the quality and look I expected from Zara. The price is high also for the quality.

I love the vibrant color and it's sleek on you! I'm probably the only one who doesn't mind that it's mandarin collar and cinch on the waist, i kinda like it actually... hehe well, to each his own! ^^ but if you're not completely happy, I'd say return!

The color is striking on you...so, so pretty! Good luck in your continued hunt for the perfect coat!

I'm loving the background scenary in the the first photo! so picturesque and the yellow jacket fits that fall-ish setting nicely! Oh well, at least you get a nice picture out it before returning/re-selling. I just bought some pumps from zara online, and it wasn't as nice as I thought it would be...so I'm trying figure out how to return it. I'm confused where to put the "red security" sticker...

What a bummer this coat didn't work out for you. I think it looks great on the model b/c it's unbuttoned, and looks great on you the same way. The waist cinch would bother me too. Fall is just getting here, so I think there will still be plenty of mustard options out there. Good luck!

I too love the color but not its style. It fits you really well.

I went to Zara last week in a hope to find trousers but their XS are way too big and long. I find their prices are quite high on most items.

Beautiful color for sure! But I agree, if you don't absolutely love it, you definitely shouldn't keep it. Hope you find the perfect mustard coat!

Oh wow what a gorgeous colour!!! I think it looks great on you, but if you're not in love with it then return. And like you said it's probably not even practical for your winters!

@PetiteAsianGirl The fit of the shoulders was great for me. It was odd that they only ordered those coats for specific stores. This coat is def. not something you're looking for anyway =)

@Olyvia I think they want you to seal the box/package with the red security sticker =)

The coat looks amazing on you! I love the mustard yellow and how well it fits on you. I'm not a fan of the mandarin collar either though. The coat is beautiful but I think it's a bit pricey at $180 considering you say it isn't very thick or warm.
