I've been eager to share what I got for my 40th birthday so, here we go! I've done "what I got for my birthday" post every year for the past several years but I totally understand if this is not your cup of tea. As long as I can remember, birthdays and holidays are always a big deal in our household. I am beyond grateful for having a loving family and a great support system. Let me start by saying this wasn't an impulse purchase. I mentioned briefly
in this post that a Rolex watch was the last big ticket item on my wishlist. We've been saving for it and finally pulled the trigger last month. Truth be told, we didn't know much about Rolex watches. One of our "life goals" is to have a matching set of Rolex watches. I really dislike using the word
"goal" but not sure what else to call it. It's just something we wanted to do at some point in our lives. We gained a lot of knowledge by talking to the salesman. I knew exactly what I wanted from the get-go. My heart set on a 36mm Datejust blue dial, jubilee band, fluted bezel and Roman numeral markers. My husband would get the exact same watch in a size 41mm. We later found out that the size 41mm is not available in Roman numeral markers. I had the hardest time deciding. Obviously, I prefer the look of Roman numeral markers but having an exact match with my husband is also something very important to me. My husband would not care. He said I can get whatever I want. It's still a match. The size 41mm is only available in stick markers. I was back and forth for a week and decided to go with the stick markers to match with his.
We plan to purchase the watch while we're in NY this month but later found out the exact combination wasn't available for immediate purchase. We placed an order back in July. 3 weeks later, I got a call from the salesperson saying my watch is in! Unfortunately, the size 41mm is a bit harder to get a hold of. The hubs is on the waiting list. Sounds like it would take 4-6 months. I can go with either size 34mm or 36mm but I prefer the 36mm. I like the oversized look. There you have it! I said it before and I will say it again (and again), material things are nice to have but family and great friends are what make a good life. My husband and I enjoy planning these purchases and saving for them. Give us a sense of support when we make the decision together.

Sure. Go ahead and serve us the story of your buying for yourself an expensive watch. But save us the helping of insincere anti-materialism.
Yes, prices are negotiable but I was told only if you buy their higher priced models (diamond and gold watches). When it comes to their popular stainless steel models, you basically pay the retail price.
Somehow I knew I’d get this type of comment lol. I said in the beginning of this post, if this is not your cup of tea, just close the browser and move on. Plain and simple. Evidently, there are people who are interested in this topic. You got it wrong. I don’t need to justify my purchase and I certainly don’t own anyone any explanations for how I spend my own $$
Hi Sydney, I have followed your blog for a while, but it is the first time to drop a comment. I always feel purchasing a decent watch is a nice way to celebrate any milestone in life. A nice watch is not only for your enjoyment, but also a heirloom for the future generations. When looking back, you will remember that you bought the watch for such a precious moment.
